When you have bad credit and no extra cash, it’s hard to face emergencies. Ours was a broken refrigerator.  We tried to have it fixed, but the repair would be something like $500.  A new one might cost $400.  And we didn’t have that, either.

You read about these things in the business magazines but you just don’t believe it until it happens to you.  Your company cuts your job to outsource to India.  And they have the audacity to ask you to train your replacements.  (Did I say “ask”?  I meant coerce under threat of getting no severance pay.)
